Man: Well, son, the justice system depends on finding 12 people who are smart and impartial enough to judge the accused intelligently without malice or favor. Boy: 12? In what? The universe? Man: No, in the court's jurisdiction. Boy: Wow. Good luck with that.

You can put it this way – would you want to have your fate decided by twelve people who were’t smart enough to get out of jury duty? The better way: hire a lawyer who knows the system well enough to get a bench trial from a sympathetic judge.

The courts make it impossible to get out of jury duty! Most of the loopholes are closed. Whether you’re a student or self-employed,there’s almost no getting out of it,short of being a caretaker,an invalid patient, over the age of 75,under the age of 18,or dead.

I recently read a blog by a man who served on a jury for a serious crime. He said the case was badly presented, but it was obvious the man was guilty. Once in the jury room, they took a vote and it came out 9 to 3 for INNOCENT! Then one of the three announced he was going to do whatever it took to get a a guilty verdict no matter how long it took. Someone suggested another vote and now it was 12 to 0 guilty. Such is the jury system.
