Would this have been funnier if the explanation in the third panel had not come from Ranger Rick but from somewhere behind him? (From one of the boys, Zack or Henri.) I’m not sure. It would have less of the whimsy of Rick guessing exactly what happened, but would further highlight Rick’s inattention to the world around him. I’m just wondering.
