Well, put me down for “The Munsters”, I guess. “The Addams Family” may have been more subtle and more textured, but I never knew what the heck they were. I like my creepy families a little more on the nose.
I like them both. Herman is a hoot, but for sheer wackiness, the mind of Chas. Addams excels! BTW, which is preferred by Gary, which by Leopold? I’m guessing Gary favors The Munsters (softer); Leopold, The Addams Family (edgier).
It’s got to be the Addams Family – more substance, less slapstick and I saw it before the Munsters which seemed like a pale “knock-off” to me. Caroline Jones was excellent.
Addams Family all the way. Morticia was hot, hot, hot while Lily was pretty washed up (did you know that Yvonne deCarlo had been a stripper on the burlesque circuit? A diligent search will bring up sites that post some of her old publicity photos from those days). Furthermore, Gomez and Morticia were TV’s first couple to have an openly passionate onscreen marriage. However, my favorite Addams Family line is from the first Raul Julia/Anjelica Huston movie: “Don’t torture yourself, Gomez. That’s my job.”
I liked Munsters for the vaudevillian quality of the humor, and The Addams Family for the sheer bizarreness of the goings on. It’s like trying to compare “Beverly Hillbillies” and “Green Acres”.(And Morticia Addams was twice as hot as any of the Marilyn Munsters.)

I wish they had made a The Munsters meet The Addams Family movie during the time those classic shows originally aired.
