    The ancient world (for example, the Egyptians) held the dung beetle (sp. Scarabaeinae) sacred because they understood the essential role they play in the circle of life. Modern man likes to pretend we are above such things. On such folly do civilizations fall.

    Yes, the “gifts” cited are for their benefit, not ours.

    (The possible exception, at least in the cartoon, is the horse. In the wild, horses rarely find it necessary to pull heavy loads, or to carry things long distances on their backs. Harness and saddle are OUR “gifts” to the horse. But, hey, our own “gift” is dominion over Creation, right?)
