I get mine from rental car companies. They are well maintained, have already taken the worst part of their depreciation, are only a couple years old, and are relatively inexpensive. I could have never afforded my Prius any other way and the 53 mpg is further savings. Does that make me a semi-plugger? Most of the time, I qualify without question.
My dad had a new 1950 Pontiac and it lasted 11 years. Starting in 1961, he bought used cars that were a couple years old. After my youngest brother was in college, my dad started buying new cars again. It was then that I figured out his reasoning – he knew that we kids would be driving those cars more than he would, so he figured that used vehicles were good enough for us. And when he could enjoy the cars himself, he resumed buying new cars. Smart man!

I’ve been doing that for the past 60 years. The Cad is a ’79 and the Dodge PU a ’97. Plenty good enough.
