This adventure concludes this week. The 80th anniversary adventure begins Sunday. The CRIMESTOPPERS area will be given over to bios of the various Tracy creators.
Mike! I can’t believe you guys are ending the story this week! Here, you have two Battle Royals going on that you artfully took weeks to develop, bringing in the best of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. And more terroriosts are coming to buy some more ammonium nitrate, at that! Tracy and Liz(z) need a week to smoke them, as well. If the Trib is telling you how to write, that sounds an awful lot like the government telling me how to live. Sad.
This story ends this week? That’s going to leave an awful lot of loose ends. Tracy and Lizz were following a clue when they went to the green house, and when they were attacked, they naturally defended themselves. But they still don’t KNOW who killed the two terrorists. And why did Ted Tellum act the way he did? And what about Gloria’s other customers?
@morrowI guess you’re new here. When Mike and Joe took over the strip, they had an edict to make shorter stories, as the previous artist took forever to move the story along, losing readers (and probably newspapers carrying the strip).Once they got going, it was clear that these guys knew their way around a good story, so the length restrictions were ended. (In fact, this story was extended from it’s original shorter version). The rules weren’t from Big Brother, but Big Business. And now, back to the action!
TC,.Re your comment:.“Poor Jim Dougherty is out of a job . . . ".Not at all. I did the bios of the various creators..But thanks for your concern..And there’s no “UG” in my surname.
Hopefully, this “80th anniversary” story will include BB Eyes, Panda, Blaze Rize, Double-up , and the oft alluded to “Mr. Crime.” Lot of loose ends out there, some of which need to be tied up, no matter how loosely.
TRACY TRIVIATo celebrate the wedding of her daughter J to her new son-in-law D, ink & letters artist Shelley Pleger added their initials to a wedding bouquet in the last panel of a Tracy strip that aired on the couples wedding day.
Squaring off against that mountain of meatTracy had better be quick on his feetA juggernaut, a colossal foe is sheThe best defense is to turn and fleeShe hasn’t been in any kind of a decent fightSince whipping those MP’s that one summers night Now she is faced with this bothersome gnatWho was too slow to use his gatHow dare he stand in her wayFor this he’ll certainly have to payShe lumbers forward, blood in her eyeAll Tracy can do is to do or dieBut look! Her charge he chose not meetAnd Gloria proves not to be so quick on her feetShe crrssh’s through the greenhouses wall of glassOnly to land on her face and not her large …Was this really a plan to get awayAnd so to return on another day?So many answers that we do seekCan they be resolved in only a week?Thank You, Det.DD, Tarry Plaguer, Jim Doherty and Doc 1947G for your compliments yesterday.@ Tarry Plaguer, I saw the heart but could not discern the initials. Very clever.
I believe Mike has set up intentional loose ends that will be answered further down the road. Even though the major action in this story will end this week, Mike has proven that, like Gould, his stories have a tendency to flow into each other…and that is good in my opinion.I don’t believe that each individual tale needs to be like an Agatha Christie novel where every thread is neatly tied in the third act. I like the fact that these individual tales are encompassed in a longer “Mr. Crime” arc.Give Mike time and I believe all will be revealed. He hasn’t disappointed us yet.
I wonder how many of Dick Tracy’s rogues gallery we will see in the upcoming anniversary story? I think they number in the low hundreds. If that’s the plan, there won’t be enough room or time for more than a handful of the major ones, and then there is the problem of balancing the need for a good story with the format.I guess that’s what Mr. Crime will be used for later, to a degree.I wonder if any of the non-newspaper Dick Tracy artists like Kyle Baker will be mentioned? He did three for Disney’s Hollywood Comics, including the adaptation of the Disney movie.

Great toss, Tracy! With her mass and velocity, Morning Gloria may easily impale herself on fragments of the greenhouse window.

An insteresting fact I came across tonight -
The Jonestown murders – suicides (913 people)
by the Followers of the
Peoples Cult in November 18, 1978 was the largest loss of
AMERICAN CIVILIAN LIFE in a non-natural disaster until the
September 11, 2001 attacks.

I know that women have a problem with the glass ceiling, but I didn’t think it could be so literal!
