Actually, I read a column just the other day putting forth the proposition that attributing movie lines to the actors who say them is a slight against the screenwriters (in this case, Curt Siodmak). Of course, in most cases the actor’s name is far better known than either the writer’s name or the character’s name, but if you’re going to say “I have always relied on the kindness of strangers”, attributing it to Tennessee Williams or even Blanche DuBois is more just than “To quote Vivian Leigh…”
Of course, Duffy probably relished the opportunity to make the name “Maria Ouspenskaya” come out of Al’s mouth. It’s funnier than either “Curt Siodmak” or “Maleva” (although those are BOTH pretty funny).
Charles Schulz actually preferred Brahms to Beethoven, but he felt “Beethoven” was just a funnier name to work with. For that same reason, the Peanuts kids regularly visited an “ophthalmologist” rather than an “eye doctor.”
