I’m thinking the well might have had something to do with either an epidemic or war. Like whoever they were fighting might have been trying to contaminate the water or something.

Reminds me of a story I once heard, hope it’s true. Pallbearers were carrying a woman into the cemetery, back in the old days. They accidentally bumped into the gate post… and heard her moan. They worked with her, and she recovered and lived another twenty years! As they approached the cemetery again, with her in the same coffin, her husband was heard to say, “Mind that gatepost!”
