Drinking coffee, reminiscing and rueing having not been in touch with Brandon for some time. Establishes character and possibly motivation for what is to come….
Isn’t it great not to have to look at policemen’s uniforms that look like they were in a dress parade in some Mid-African emerging nation? (That translates to ’good artwork, guys!)
Patton was made chief when Brandon resigned over the Big Frost debacle. Before that he had many years wearing his green suit, hat, and red bow tie. Oh, those were the good old days!
I agree. This quiet moment sets the stage to justify what’s to come. I suspect Brandon will die and Tracy and Patton will renew their devotion to their jobs in time for the strip’s 80th birthday on 10/4. Echoing the vow Tracy made over Tess’ father’s corpse right before Tracy joined the force.

The talk establishes why Brandon matters Pat and Dick. And the scene shows something of the character of Dick and Pat.

For someone who was put into plainclothes, he looks rather “uniform-y” to me.

Early in Pat’s career as a detective, he was often a bungler! He was comic relief for a time.-Donnie Pitchford/“Lum and Abner”
