In November 1911, Italian pilot Giulio Gavotti became the world's first bomber pilot when he dropped handheld bombs from his reconnaissance plane over Ottoman troops in Libya! The Manchineel tree is so toxic that standing underneath it during a rainstorm can cause skin and eye irritation! On March 13, 2011, police in Ashland, Ohio, USA, arrested an Amish man after he crashed into a car while racing against his cousin in a horse-drawn buggy!

I’ve got to get me some of those trees. I bet they’re great for keeping stray dogs out of the yard.

That would have been shortly before WWI ended.

Geez. I just looked up info on the Manchineel Tree. Skin and eye irritation?? What I found says it “blisters” the skin and trying to burn the tree can cause blindness if the smoke gets in your eyes. Eating it’s fruit can be fatal. That’s one nasty tree!!

I thought i read that during the Civil War they dropped some sort of bombs from hot air balloons. I also know that some Amish kids got in trouble for hooking radios up to the batteries used for lights on the wagons.

@jogger2:Actually, Nov. 1911 was well before WWI (began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918). Guess they were just getting warmed up for serious warfare.
