We have now passed the halfway mark of Bill Watterson’s first sabbatical, which was 9 months long. During that 9 months, very early strips were rerun in the newspapers, selected from the first 14 months of the strip. Those are the strips that we have been reading since May.Today’s strip was created after Bill Watterson had been drawing Calvin and Hobbes for only 9 months, but already it is looking like Bill’s much later strips. These early strips will continue until the first week of February, and then we should again be seeing the later strips.
“These early strips will continue until the first week of February, and then we should again be seeing the later strips.”
Seems like a strange conceit on the part of the syndicate, to insert a series of “vacation” strips for a sabbatical which occurred 20 years ago. Why not just run the strip from beginning to end with no pointless interruptions?
Hi JohnDiFoolThe problem for the syndicate involves trying to keep the strip’s seasons in sync with our actual seasons when we are reading the reruns. If Bill Watterson had taken sabbaticals that were 1 year long, they would not have this problem. But he only took 9 months each time, so right now they still need 9 months of “filler” to keep the seasons in sync. Either that, or they would always have to skip the first 3 months of strips that he drew after each 9-month sabbatical.Bill went on his first sabbatical in May and returned in February. So if they were to skip the sabbatical reruns, initially we would be reading May reruns during May, and then we would suddenly be reading February reruns (with snow) during May. Then, the following March we would be reading Christmas reruns, and so on.So there is no perfect solution, and they have opted to rerun the 9 months of filler material from each sabbatical, rather than skip some of the strips and never rerun them. Unfortunately, this means that during each 10-year period of reruns, more than 500 of the strips are seen twice, whereas all of the rest are seen only once. After multiple decades of reruns, those 500 strips begin to look very familiar.
This cartoon seems more like a verbal boxing match than football. I haven’t had any smoochies in years, bleah…..I think Calvin’s nickname should be “Crash”, but what do I know?

In this version of football, you win by out-imagining the other team.

Most organized sports are meaningless to me, but I like how Calvin and Hobbes play. Calvinball anyone?

Heck with two heads, two imaginations are better than one. This could make me finally like football, assuming only C&H played.

Smooches from the cheerleaders would certainly motivate me.

Has Hobbes ever thought of taking up classical ballet? He’s so graceful in the fourth panel.
