Slow Page Loading on GoComics (Update #247)Here is a message that I received from GoComics yesterday:Hello,We apologize for the intermittent downtime and/or slowness on www.gocomics.com.If you’re still having the problem, can you please try holding down the shift key on your keyboard while clicking the refresh button in your internet browser?Sincerely,GoComics Support

Note: The above message is for Mozilla Firefox users. GoComics is talking about reloading the page while bypassing the cache. If you are using Internet Explorer, hold down the Control key and then click the Refresh button. If you are using Google Chrome, hold down the Control key and then click the Reload button.I’ve been wanting to test this out, but every time I open GoComics to try to test it, the site is running super fast. When I want the site to run slow, it simply won’t cooperate. How frustrating. If you are experiencing very slow page-loading and you find that these instructions help to improve loading time, if you find that they have no effect, or if you find that they cause your computer to spontaneously combust, please post your findings, and I’ll feed back a summary of the results to GoComics.

Technically, Calvin didn’t have enough forward momentum in panel 1 to be able to flip completely over. He needed to be running, in order to have sufficient kinetic energy that could be translated into potential energy in the form of height when he tripped, not to mention also translating forward momentum into rotational momentum. But, we’ll let that pass….

Hi Santa. I don’t know. Maybe someone else here can answer your question: How do you reload a Web page while bypassing the cache in Safari on an iPad?

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could always see little trip-ups in a positive way? Some of us (myself included, and I take after my mother this way) tend to take the unknown with a negative response until we’ve had time to process it.

@Santa GrogI also use an IPad and experience the same thing you do. I thought it was my IPad, glad to know it’s not! My IPad works great with everything else except GoComics…very frustrating!

I wonder if Bill Watterson reads these comments. I’d like to thank him.

I could understand why he retired, as he showed a lot of philosophy as well as wit in the strip and I could see how someone could figure he had expressed all that he wanted to.

I liked but never fully understood his exit strip, until now. I am retiring at the end of the year, and that last C&H is now my theme.

I have some vague plans (going to church every day, family business, volunteering, exercise, and low cost travel), but nothing specific except the family business.

To those who want me to have ready a full plan for my retirement, I say why should I start drawing on my big white sheet of paper before I get there?

Coincidentally, I started working in my current job the same year (though earlier in the year) that Bill Watterson retired C&H. It’s hard to realize that it has been 16 years since the strip ended, because it is still so alive.

May the joy and magic of the holidays be with all of you.

@HobbesI can sympathize with Snoopy in the comic. Two years ago I fell off a ladder and landed down on one foot straight legged. I shattered my tibia and required an external fixator to be bolted to my leg/ankle for 3 months and was on crutches for a total of 4.5 months.

Incidently this was caused by working on Christmas lights…

This happened to me in a small town. I was walking on a sidewalk did not notice a rise of 2" and caught my foot and went flying. I did not do a summersalt like Calvin and I did get hurt. Banged both my knees and hands. Really hurt.So Calvin good job on your landing.

Luckily Calvin is short enough that landing on his butt didn’t hurt much! Good recovery. I know cats who try this sort of thing . . . “Oh, yes, I meant to fall off that shelf!”

For those who would like a tool for clearing/cleaning your cache, here is a free one: http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

I mainly use it to keep my registry clean, but it’s useful for other things, too.

This is powerfully reminiscent of the great bike pratfall in an early scene from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. That movie dates to 1985, the same year C&H started its run. But the similarity may be a coincidence.
