There is a difference between not loving your adult children, and finally being free of them day-to-day. It isn’t an empty nest, it’s recovered space. What you have to avoid at all costs are boomerang kids. I would rather pay my kid’s rent than have them move back in and I love them both dearly, and would donate a kidney to each even if it meant my death. I can die for ‘em, I just can’t live with ’em for long anymore.

Mona’s going to have a very soggy shoulder!Heckaroonie, Donna! My parents went on any number of vacations while I was living on my own and working! They went to vacation spots that I’ve still never visited—Las Vegas, Florida, etc. Deal with it, Donna.

This tendency for kids to hang on to their hopes of being rescued from life by their parents, most often manifests itself in attachment to unrealistic hopes of vacation time together. They don’t seem to get that parents need alone time too.
