The kickers are happy in panel 1 just to get some attention whether it’s from some kid off the street or from the coaches. In most schools (including college) the kickers are just left to themselves to practice.

I think Gil is going for the Don Johnson – Miami Vice look. You can’t see his pants, but I bet they are linen. And by the end fo the first quarter, the jacket sleeves will be rolled up.
Speaking of Joe Pa…Gil is getting less involved in the x’s and o’s every year…he used to actually draw up plays and do chalk talks, but now the most specific instructions he gives are “follow the game plan, stay focused.”
