I’m perpetually amazed that people who obviously like comics (at least enough to go to a website and comment on them) nonetheless don’t recognise humorous banter between good friends.

The same sort of comments arise about “Pickles”, whenever Earl and Opal rag on each other, and in many other forums here, as soon as some character is flippant or sarcastic to another.

Yet I don’t see these remarks when Hobbes is horribly sarcastic to Calvin, and I don’t think anyone expects Katherine Hepburn to be sugar-sweet to Spencer Tracy or Cary Grant — or vice versa.

It’s FUNNY, people.

Trout will say anything she can to get a rise out of Agnes, and Agnes knows it.

So she’s warning her that one day she’ll get the better of her….. in repartee.

Tony Cochran is one of the best dialogue writers in the comics, and these characters are, as countryfolk said, friends forever.

And BTW Night-Gaunt — that’s true, too — but I think Trout usually isn’t even trying for truth.

She’s trying for a 1-2 comedic punch.

they are close because Trout is the only one that will put up with Agnes!
