This proves Nate has a stand. While he doesn’t focus on other things, he uses the power of his stand to focus on other things. Because he cares so much about chess, his stand activates. I believe that after a lot of chess matches, he will truly awaken his stand completely.
Nate probably could’ve faked saying checkmate because his team would run over to hug him before his opponent could memorize the board, and then the board would get knocked over by Nate’s team so nobody could prove it wasn’t a real checkmate
