Just read in the paper about an option to let B.C.S. only select the #1 vs #2 . This would let the Bowls select the teams they want (like the OLD days). Good news for Notre Dame and the big conferences that “travel” well and not so much for the teams that do not have the big money traveling supporters.
The bowl games exist for their own benefit, not for the teams or the conferences. Their primary function is to get people with disposable income to visit and leave as much money as possible behind. As long as there are cushy bowl representative jobs and bowl game civic booster organizations there will be plenty of bowl games. To paraphrase Field of Dreams, “If you hold them, they will come.”
