everything is wrong with this planet. we pollute, earth gives us earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes. we say we care about others, but we don’t. we are told to not to kill, but we do a lot of killing. we are told not to be a glutton, but have you seen us lately.

If it’s broke, don’t gripe about it, fix it. Otherwise get off and make more room for the rest of us.

Allow me to say (someone has to) that *vwdualnomand*’s list — and it’s hardly exhaustive — is exactly what we would expect to see in a sinful, fallen world..Before you start, this is not a uniquely Christian view. Buddhism’s view of life in this world is similar: it’s a place of falsehood and misery to be done with and moved on from. My personal favorite is the ancient Aztec take on it: that chocolate was a gift from the gods to the suffering human race to help make up for having to live in this wretched world…and in the afterlife, you got to have all the chocolate you could want. Now, that’s an afterlife. :].My point stands, though…and so does Hammy’s. Our ability to compare this world critically with what we all clearly see it ought to be, is the strongest evidence we have that this isn’t what we exist for, and we don’t belong here. (C. S. Lewis compared us to soldiers temporarily trapped behind enemy lines, surviving as best we can until we’re rescued. It’s as good a metaphor as any.)

Nabuq: nothing good about what’s gone on at Alkali Lake dump, nothing was “eating” the 2-4-5T manufacturing residues. Now their ARE bacteria that can consume petroleum components, but I wouldn’t suggest using anything in a chemical dump as compost!! And, yes, part of my “problems” from ’Nam are because of exposure to that same “Agent Orange”. (Diabetes, peripheral neuropathy)

And, by the way, the moon also lacks human stupidity, pride, greed, and cruelty. So?.None of this demonstrates in the slightest that “such mythologies” don’t represent reality…unless you’ve already decided a priori, based on no more evidence than your own fears and prejudices, that such things can’t be true; therefore such things aren’t true; therefore those who suppose that they are true are ignorant fools..Bless your heart….
