Once in school (I was about 13) I had to read out a passage containing the word “whore” (we were reading a play by Jean Anouilh – don’t ask me why), a word that I was unfamiliar with, and of course I didn’t know that the “w” was silent, did I? Hilarity ensued among my more worldly classmates.
