Real cats (as opposed to comic-strip cats) don’t like to be stared at eye-to-eye. When a cat enters a room, any cat people usually look at the cat, while non-cat people look away. This makes the cat gravitate towards the people who are looking away, i.e., the non-cat people (you). This applies to all cats, even the big ones. There are cases of people who have been confronted by lions and had the cats back off simply by facing them and staring at them until they turn away.

Just stopped by to verify as true what runar said about staring at cats, etc. It’s rude to look a cat straight in the eyes, by a cat’s reckoning, and who wants to be around rude people? If you want to apologize, turn your head so you don’t appear to be doing a staredown, then flutter your eyelids. To a cat, that’s like saying “I like you!” Try these hints from runar and me. You’ll have purring cats on your lap in no time!
