Actually you all are lucky you still have a payphone in you neighborhood. I am one of maybe 4 people in the world who does not own a cell phone. I have to go thru hell & high water if I am out & I have to make a call. It seems like nowadays payphones have become artifacts.

KingRat: The species went extinct on a practical level when the last breeding pair disappeared. (Mom never showed me the difference between girl and boy rotary phones, and now it’s too late for a conservation effort.)

The excellent strip “Sluggy Freelance” has a character (Bun-Bun, a lop eared rabbit with a serious attitude and a switchblade) whose stated purpose in life is to exterminate telemarketers.

John Ringo, in the series starting with “There will Be Dragons’ set in the far future, has an AI rabbit who was built expressly do do this (well, that, and preserve the memory of Baywatch ). He finds himself somewhat purposeless, as the last of the species died late in the 20th century.
