The press is about the only thing that keeps politicians in line.. mostly. Without public scrutiny, our country would be worse off than it is now. Scary thought.
In my humble opinion, the country ran much better when it took six months for the doings in Washington to reach the folks back home. The instantaneous communication we have today is both a blessing and a curse.
