Don’t knock the smartphone. It’s reinventing society..I’ve thought for some time that the Internet would have as great an impact on society as much as the first printing press. Five centuries ago the printing press made all the knowledge of the world available to anyone, not just the wealthy elite who could afford hand-made books. The result? The Renaissance, and then the Enlightenment. From those followed, among other things, the existence of this country..The Internet took that universal availability of knowledge out of the library and put it on the desktop, only a few keystrokes away whenever you want it. The smartphone put the Internet itself in your pocket — along with instant pictures and video, and instant information sharing with anyone else. What will the result of that be? We won’t know until after it happens and we look back on it, astonished at how so much could have happened so quickly..Not all of it will be good…but it will be a very different world in 2050 than in 1950, and there’ll be no going back..
