Re: Classroom,Ah yes, the Tuesday morning duck and cover drill. Nothing like living in the ’50s in the middle of a dozen or more primary targets.

Maybe “confront” should be “confronts”. Goes better with the “yo”, ya know? (See how helpful I can be when I understand the caption?)

That classroom is doing a nuclear bomb attack drill. It seems silly now, doesn’t it? Like all they wanted to do was induce terror and anti-Communist fervor in Americans. Because the only good thing to come out of getting into that position was that your lips would be closer to your @$$ to kiss it goodbye.

That rosy rice ring looks tasty. Well, not really, but I’d eat it. Well, I’d eat just about anything, so I’m not a good point of reference.

My wife’s son who is a marine chief engineer on a large tugboat just last month got a hog tattooed on one foot and a chicken on the other. Chicken and pigs float so sailors get these tattoos on their feet to keep them from sinking and drowning at sea.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the poster child picture on the blog was this old picture of me and a margay cat. It was taken in Panama (well, the Canal Zone, but it’s all just Panama now) in 1974 or 1975.It just wanted to see me; it wasn’t attacking.

Hmmmmm, packing up and leaving, never to be heard from again, A La Connie Converse. I wonder how many of us have thought of or done just that? Would I tell you if I had?

Re Connie Converse: I hate to be picky, but shouldn’t it be “A selection of her recordings was released”? This is tricky, because “selection” is singular but in this case it almost certainly contains more than one recording. On the other had, would you say, “A mob were sighted” or “A mob _was_sighted”? On the other hand, would you say, “A flock of birds was seen” or “A flock of birds _were_seen”? Strunk & White (if I remember right) said it depends on whether you consider the flock as a single entity or are interested in the birds as individuals. (My copy is at work, so I can’t look it up.) On the other hand, Strunk & White were (was?) thoroughly lambasted by a grammarian last week on the fiftieth anniversary of that book.

After all is said and done, I think Teresa was wrong based solely on the fact that it sounds better with “was”, at least to me. Of course, Vlad will be the final authority on that, and I’m willing to accept his correction.
