Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for February 03, 2012
Transcript:
Rat: Hi, boys and girls... this is King Friday and Queen Sara. King Friday is usually a happy king, but today he is sad. Why? Because the Arab Spring has threatened despotic monarchs everywhere. Oh, no, King Friday... it's Jihad Jerry. Oh, well... try to have a democratic form of government, Jerry. Puppet: You... put on burka. Mr. Rat's Neighborhood

I am reminded of Zebra’s fear several years ago that Osama bin Laden would indoctrinate the Family Circus kids. I suppose this is a little more realistic than the happy dictatorship I grew up with on the show. Ah, for that old innocence.

Actually, I don’t expect that the chances of a democracy are too good …

Mr. Rat seems to speak for our Department of State. Not too many mourners for old despotic King Friday, I suppose, and just a soft chorus of subdued “oh, my’s” at the fate of Queen Sara. Such is what we call diplomacy, boys and girls.

You go, Rat! Never too early to warn kids about the perils of popular uprisings.

Very funny Mr. Pastis, however, I don’t want to be within ten feet of you when the talaban catches up with you!

For those wondering about the King of Id, he does just fine and ends up part of the governing board of The Syndicate that runs much of what is left after the coming apocalypse that is the backdrop for Weapon (Charlie) Brown and Co. My question is what happens to Rat and Pig after said apocalypse?

Well done Mr. Pastis! Thanks for revealing the true nature of the Arab Spring, and not covering it with a burqa like most of the MSM.

But once the marines come in, tap Jihad Jerry in the head, liberate the Kingdom of Make Believe, and re-establish a puppet monarchy favorable to the strategic interests of the United States, “King Friday the 14th” just won’t sound as cool…

I was at Heathrow Airport in London a few years ago when a burka clad woman locked eyes with me. REALLY locked eyes. Scared the sh*t out of me.

Great (and brave) cartoon today! And I’m thinking a spinoff strip is in order for Jihad Jerry (“pop! pop!” will become a popular cultural catchphrase!)

Mr Rogers was a kind an gentle man and his show provided comfort to millions of children.
Always sad to see leftist mock and heap contempt upon decent people. They must be the saddest, angriest, people on the planet. They certainly are the most violent and murderous.

And so King Friday was buried at sea so as not to become a martyr of his neighborhood… Thanks Stephan for a great chuckle today.

“And let’s not forget the Jewish terrorists who also would deny women any role in public life.”??? Surely this isn’t a slam on Israel, the only liberal democracy in the region? One that allows women full political participation and employment – and one that not only allows, but requires women to serve in the military, just like men. Am I missing something here? What Jewish terrorists denying women any public life are you speaking of?

So rat got tired of playing Mr. Rogers and switched to Glenn Beck. Yea, stings when Glenn is right eh! :-P
bmonk almost 13 years ago
I don’t have much hope for the Arab Spring, or the anti-government protests in Iran. But it’s interesting that Putin helped create a Middle class in Russia, and now they are working to get a de facto democracy going. There’s hope yet.

Is it just me, or does Rat in this arc look more like Rod Serling than Mr. Rogers?

How to Annoy Your Waiter:
10. Eight hour lunch, two dollar tip.
9. Ask, “Excuse me, are you a really bad singer, or a really bad actor?”
8. After he describes each special, you shout, “Garbage!”
7. Whenever he walks by, cough and mutter, “Minimum wage”.
6. Every few seconds, yell, “More waffles, Cuomo!”
5. Insist that before ordering, you be allowed to touch the London broil.
4. Tie tablecloth around neck and say, “You wouldn’t charge Superman for dinner, would you?”
3. Every time you eat or drink, cough really hard.
2. As he walks by to the kitchen, scream, “He’s gonna spit in the chowder!”
1. Three words: eat the check.
