@SUSAN NEWMAN: I logged on too late the other day to respond about dressing for religious services: In my Manhattan Havurah I get away with wearing blue jeans on Saturdays and notice that some women who read the portion wear sleaveless blouses. In my Florida winter home, I wouldn’t dare come to sabbath services in blue jeans.

Okay, this seems lame. Even for a comic strip. Even for Gasoline Alley, which I’ve always loved. JUST when they get inside the church the money starts to pop out of the organ? After all of his years in prison? There were a lot of ways this story could have gone but this way seems…awful.

@DAVID: King Herod redesigned the 2nd Temple and the Jews were afraid he was gonna make it into a heathen temple – so he built around it. THat’s why it isn’t considered the “3rd Temple.”

@Nabuquduriuzhur: Enlightened Jewish Law says that in matters of life and death or health reasons one may break the Sabbath. It’s called “Pikuah Nefesh.” Each year I try to increase my level of Sabbath/holiday observance. This year I stopped cooking on Shabat and no longer open my mail. One thing I may never give up is using email on Shabat. I admit it’s a real addiction.

Raspberryice54 : Different congregations in NY or Florida are different in their conservatism/liberalism. I go to the Chabad and Conservative congregations in Miami because they are right near my home. I know there are “way-out” congregations in other parts of the city. One of the reasons I prefer my NY havurah is because I’m more comfortable dressing informally.

Raspberryice54 : I live in North Miami, but only for 4 months of the year – I’m a snowbird. Otherwise, I’m a New Yorker. I didn’t wanna get so far from the Gasoline Alley storyline (which seems preposterous) but, since cominng back from Yucatan after 2 weeksw, I couldn’t get back to my routine of posting comments in the wee hours and missed (unfortunately) the thread about wearing pants in a house of worship.

It’s a miracle! Our organ takes money, not give it.

I wondered about that, too. I was expecting an old-fashioned pump organ like my Grandma had, or possible an electric Wurlitzer.
