Driving was discouraged to save on rubber for the tires, as well as the wartime speed limit.Might mention there was a tax on rail and air tickets also during WWII to discourage unececessary travel. (The Korean War was in the history books before this tax was discontinued!)
Fan of Conspiracy theories?Let’s look at some facts.
1973, Oil Crisis. OAPEC, not the oil companies.OAPEC declared an embargo on Oil productionto protest the US aid to Israel during the Yom Kippur War.The shortage of crude oil and rising prices resulted in in US gas rationing and shortages in some areas of the country.
1979 Energy Crisis. The Iranian Revolution disrupted Oil production from Iran. The other members of OPEC (the expanded OAPEC) increased production to match that lost in IRAN. There was no shortage of oil or gas, rather there was panic buying in the US by those who remembered the shortages of 1973.
President James Earl Carter objected to the Oil Industry regulations created under President Nixon, and was preparing to phase them out during his Presidency. This was started prior to the Iranian Revolution with efforts to gain support in Congress for this deregulation.
Oil Reserves – Known oil deposits that are not in production.
Time Scale needed to bring such reserves into production:
18 months for the first wells to be drilled.
Three to five years to build needed pipelines and production facilities.
5 to 10 years to bring a field into full production.
Actually some automobiles made in the late 40’s could be cranked. I had a ‘46 Chevy truck I used in my business that often needed to be cranked by hand. I had it in the 80’s and often the old 6 volt battery wasn’t enough.
I operated a train engine at a steel mill and saw with my own eyes the tank trucks come into the plant to fill up the plant’s tanks at night and then back up over to a ditch and dump the gasoline in a ditch. You couldn’t believe how fast storage tanks were being built at the refineries in Pasadena, Texas, and at Galveston, tanker ships that couldn’t be unloaded were lined up in the ship channel.
As mentioned previously, Bud Fisher stopped drawing Mutt and Jeff in 1932 but still controlled the strip—Al Smith took over as artist in 1932—but Bud Fisher insisted that his signature remain signed until the comic was no longer published.

Reminiscent of old Archie drawings from the 1940’s.
