Should we fear that our boy is off to try to teach Susie about the (un)dress and customs of Gauguin’s natives? Hope not. or he’ll meet a ’50s star- the Big Bopper.
If I remember correctly Gaugin more or less deserted his pregnant wife to go live in the South Pacific, and his friend van Gogh cut off his ear after Gaugin bragged about his conquests at the local whorehouse, something van Gogh couldn’t afford, hence the gift of his ear to one of the whores there. Still, I like his paintings and his quest for a simpler life. Didn’t he die from syphillus? I seem to remember him writing that there was always some 13 year old trollop coming around to his hut. As John Lennon once sang. “Just give me the truth. All I want is the truth, I’m tired of…” I love Calvin and Hobbes. Why would anyone want more than one kid? Isn’t one enough?
I still say HOBBES the commenter is Watterson in disguise, checking up on how his strip lives on. How else could he pull up the painting appropriate to the day without advance knowledge of when this would appear?
Thank you for the explanation and links, Hobbes. I read the wiki link and find it sad that it was sold on so quickly by the person Gaugin gave it to. Particularly if he painted it for that person, though the article doesn’t say so. What price friendship. I’ve unfortunately known a few people like that.
Hi hazardboy. Over the years, I’ve created a database with key words and dates for my favorite Peanuts strips. I search it to locate strips on particular topics. Then I enter the dates into GoComics to find the strips, and then I post the strips using the GoComics web links. There are 50 years of Peanuts strips, and I’m still adding to the database. I started creating it because I would often be reminded of strips from the past but would be unable to locate them. I also save some information on strips by other cartoonists. I read about 20 strips each day, and whenever I see a strip that I really like, I record some key words and the date for future reference.
A child of this intelligence level should be recognized and allowed to develop. In todays world, we label them as “eccentric”, and attempt to control their every thought with drugs.
The Paul being spoken of is certainly NOT the one who authored most of the New Testament – on the other hand, it’s a great place to find the answers to Calvin’s questions…have a great weekend folks…khp<><
If he doesn’t even know who Paul Gauguin is, then how does he know the quote? Also makes me wonder how he said Gauguin’s (last) name as it certainly isn’t pronounced the way it’s spelled. Seems like that would be kind of tough for a 6-year-old when you’ve got a whole lot of adults that probably can’t even say it right!
For the record the best available evidence is that syphylis was brought to Europe by the crewmen on Columbus’ various voyages to the New World..It was originally referred to as the Spanish disease, then the French disease, etc as it spread across Europe.

Dealing with Calvin on a daily basis, I’m sure Mom has more than just coffee in her cup. Maybe a little Bailey’s or Kahlua.

Hi mythreesons. No, I’m not Bill Watterson. How could a talking tiger claim to be a syndicated cartoonist? It wouldn’t make any sense.:>)
