I think goldenroya is correct. They named it Iceland in hopes of keeping their enemy away from where they lived.Letting them think they were living in Greenland.

As others have already noted, the ice cap in Greenland is melting, with the most rapid disappearance of the ice occurring where the glaciers meet the sea. Therefore in this case, we should not believe that Greenland will be permanently 80% covered in ice.
