Usually, if I feel offended by something somebody says, I take a second look at the person and consider if I want to give that sort of idiot the satisfaction of knowing that I have any regard for the content of his comments. If they’re not an idiot, then there’s usually a misunderstanding, or, rarely, an actual insult. Only at the last is there any use in being offended.
You know what, though – while it’s true that some people are oversensitive (and I admit that I am one of them at times), I still think there are a lot of things spoken aloud that are truly insensitive. There have been some truly egregious acts of racism and prejudice in recent history, and the wounds from those acts are often still unhealed. So sometimes people overreact to something minor. And often times what one person thinks is “minor” is actually quite unjust, so a person is right to speak out and try to prevent that kind of thing from being said in the future.

Oh, man, isn’t that just like robots? What losers. I think we should make it harder for them to vote. I support genetic testing at the polling booth.

Sometimes it does not work… A lot of bullies are encouraged by your pain, and sensitivity. Still, always try!
