Cathy Classics by Cathy Guisewite for December 11, 2009
Transcript:
Cathy (writing a letter): Dear Jill, This was on triple markdown and I paid for half of it with expiring holiday bonus bucks, plus I got a $15 value "gift with purchase" with it that I'm giving to another friend, so even though it looks extravagant, I only spent $4.95 on you. Cathy: I miss the good old days when we could just say,"Merry Christmas."

Asians brag about how much they spent, Anglos brag about how much they didn’t spend.

While I’m sure they got a deal when someone gets me a gift, there’s no way that I want to know what it was. One time, my child got a gift of a white dress that I knew she’d never wear, so I returned it using the gift receipt. The store said they could only give me $1.75 in cash for it. I ended up getting a store credit for the full price.

This not what Christmas is about, or gift giving. Cathy is shallow. I am gone.

Seriously. Why in the world would you ever tell someone how much a gift cost (or, in this case, how much it didn’t cost?) That’s way too much information!

you’re just figuring this shallowness out?
I’d keep reading it though. A Superman is bound to show up.

This is so stupid! Why would anyone write such a letter with a Christmas gift? Why does she think she can’t just give the gift and say Merry Christmas! I’d be happy they said Merry Christmas rather than happy holidays.

I think the point was a gift-exchange agreement about price. If you give something that looks way over the price limit, your recipient might feel guilty about it. Not sure that justifies the detailed letter, though. ;)

How about we all lighten up? She’s funny, she’s “writing” a note that will never go in the package but describes the situation. For heaven’s sake. Haven’t we all wondered this given the incredible sales and reductions?

It’s all about the last panel - “I miss the good old days when we could just say Merry Christmas”.
No more politically correct “Happy Holidays”.
It’s Christmas - wish everyone you know a Merry Christmas. No one will be offended.

I was just at the bank and one of the tellers had a sign by him that said-I won’t be offended if you wish me a Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas!
And I think Cathy and her friend must have had some “I’ll onlly spend X dollars on you” pact.

I don’t understand why so many people read this comic and then post about how much they hate it and how awful she is.
You take a simple little joke and turn it into a tirade about the “dehumanization” and destruction of Christmas. Have you never READ Cathy before? She is the befuddlement we ALL feel about the holidays, our weight, our jobs , relationships, and modern life. If you read her comics from the 70s until now you will see a treasure trove of social commentary about the changing nature of relationships, the workplace, the roles and status of women, technology, and all kinds of other things.
If you are so sour that you cannot see humor in a comic strip, stop reading it! You only have one life to live, why are you wasting it whining about a cartoon instead of doing something productive or at least something that brings you happiness?, I have been reading Cathy for years and years, and it bugs me after I have my daily laugh to see you all tearing it down and degrading it. Have you nothing better to do? Lighten up!

Well said, Kukula! I love the way Cathy says what I often think, but would be too embarrassed to say out loud. The best comedy is stuff you can identify with, and Cathy is a lot like me. Great stuff - keep it coming, Cathy!
