Pig-Pen only made around 140 appearances in the entire history of the strip – and he appeared only TWICE in between 1968 and 1980; that’s just one appearance every six years. Schulz admitted in an interview that he eventually ran out of ideas for Pig-Pen, and that he never really liked to draw him in the first place. Such a shame. By 1970 Patty, Violet, Shermy and Pig-Pen had disappeared from the strip, and day in, day out, Schulz drew hardly anything but Snoopy and Woodstock. I’d trade Woodstock for Pig-Pen and Violet any day.
What kind of parents does Pig-Pen have who send him to school so filthy? He was even in the Christmas play filthy as…well… a pig. I miss him along with the others ones who all disappeared. At least Linus stayed and Rerun is so cute in later strips. And where would we be without Snoopy and Charlie Brown?
There was a sequence in one of the earlier complete collections of Peanuts strips where everyone gets dirty like Pigpen, Violet first. Even Schroeder was covered with dirt. Quite strange. It was never reprinted in any collection that Schulz had control over.

Pigpen if you invent one, you’d be filthy rich.

You could write your answers in the dirt. Someone rather well-known did that once and it sent a whole hostile audience packing.

Pig Pen does bathe, but he is literally dirt magnet and stays clean for only 1 minute.
