This sounds suspiciously like the Robert Maxwell situation. Maxwell, you may recall established a media empire that included the New York Daily News (which he bought off of the Tribune Corporation, owners of the Chicago Tribune), the newspaper that Little Orphan Annie debuted in. At the time his company was in rough financial straits and after he died the whole thing collapsed in a mass of debts. Maxwell “fell off” his yacht at sea and suffered a heart attack and drowned. Or at least that’s the official story.
