Joanie: It's not letting up... Joanie: Gram? Joanie: Yes? Alex: Are you worried that I'm never going to get married? Joanie: No, dear, I'm worried that a tight election could turn on a small screw-up, that Elizabeth could lose because I neglected to get snow tires. Alex: But... what's that got to do with my wedding? Joanie: How do I text the highway patrol?

Alex is momentarily conceited.

Are you kidding? Alex is perennially self-absorbed.
Ravenswing almost 13 years ago
That’d be “State Police” there, Joanie – you’re in Massachusetts.

@Bill Weinberg & Pouncing Tiger:
Infants are self-absorbed, but that doesn’t make them conceited. The person who is constantly saying “Woe is me, I’m just no good” may be self-absorbed, but you could not call them conceited.
The two are not the same. I know people who are dreadfully conceited who aren’t in the least self-absorbed. Some of them will hardly ever use the words I, me, my, mine. They simply dismiss anyone who disagrees with them as a fool or an idiot, and/or assume that other people look upon them with jealousy or envy, saying things like: “He’s only angry because deep down he knows he’s wrong.”

If Elizabeth Warren actually needs drivers who know how to get through, no matter what the weather, I am available. Of course, I’m not a toon. But I do feel kind of funny right now!

That’s our Alex. Doggedly in the moment and on point. And Leo’s mom was right—she does look like a terrier.

Does anyone remember the 50’s TV show, Highway Patrol, starring Broderick Crawford? Other than Joanie an’ me, that is…

Remember ajnotales, it’s not who’s right, it’s who’s left.

Since we are beginning to reminisce about old cop shows, anyone remember the late 1970s-early 1980s TV series “CHiPs”? It was a about motorcycle patrolmen with the California Highway Patrol (“CHiP”, get it?). Disregard the “B” actors who had their 15-minutes with the series, there are two things about the show that always stuck in my mind:1. I lived in California for five years prior to the series; my friends and I were quite aware of the California Highway Patrol’s presence when we drove. Never once before “CHiPs” came on the air did I ever hear the California Highway Patrol referred to as “chips” – we always called them by the initials C-H-P (and occasionally some other euphemisms.)2. When I did watch the show I marveled at how two motorcycle cops could ride their bikes parallel in a lane (actually a no-no in itself) and carry on a conversation while going at freeway speeds. Heck, while on my bike at least, because of engine and wind noise I couldn’t hear myself speak, forget about anyone else.

to me, any mention of highway patrol gives me an instant picture of Broderick Crawford (yes, clad in his standard dark business suit and fedora) on his car’s police radio and the unforgettable theme song when it came on every friday night in the mid to late 1950’stoday’s bonus question: does anybody remember what was his car’s unit number was?.

She’ll get married. There are plenty of takers lined up reading this strip right now. But Toggle’s a keeper.

old Broderick Crawford didn’t even have a driver’s license due to to many drunk driving tickets – and the laws were much looser then.

Looks like Grams is having trouble staying focused during a crisis.

Never saw Broderick Crawford, or Ponch and John man chain control in winter. Believe it was an old Oldsmobile Crawford used in the old show, and radios make bike to bike conversations easy on their rice-burners. Broderick performed the “state police” function, Ponch and John were “paper hangers”, actually.

NYC has a Highway Patrol. They are a part of the NYPD. They wear motorcycle boots, and their police caps crused in a manner similar to motorcycle cops from the the 1930s, even though they drive suped up Dodge Chargers.
