Elude: 1. to avoid or escape by speed, cleverness, trickery, etc.; evade: to elude capture.2. to escape the understanding, perception, or appreciation of: The answer eludes me. ALLUDE: 1. to refer casually or indirectly; make an allusion (usually followed by to ): He often alluded to his poverty.2. to contain a casual or indirect reference (usually followed by to ): The letter alludes to something now forgotten. (Better to find out here than on something important.)
I used the apostrophe after “resume” to try to help the reader differentiate between: 1. a list of my attributes to describe myself to a possible employer, and 2. the act of restarting an action after being stopped. (And it was easier to type than resumé, both of which – according to a little Googling – are at least acceptable.)My confusion in the old days was about “remuneration”, which I misread as “renumerate”, and it just stuck. I can’t say when, and I can’t say why. I only knew it was about getting paid. Elections never crossed my mind.
