I think that the real reason Walter couldn’t be there, is that he is getting a probe in that “No-No” place.

Ok…Area 52 is NOT next to area 51…it’s in the Netherstorm region of Outland. Take the Portal in the Blasted Lands region of the Eastern Kingdoms on Azeroth then grab a flight straight to it, just watch out for the Goblin rockets…
