Caulfield: So you and the mean driver became friends? Frazz: Eventually. There was one ugly moment along the way. We stepped out of the cafe just as a huge pack of cyclists blew though the stop sign. Caulfield: and he started screaming at them? Frazz: I did

Good for you Frazz!I have great repect for safe cyclists. Unfortunately, some leave their brains behind when they get on the bike — and some drivers do it when they start the engine. When brainless cyclists meet brainless motorists…..I don’t like to think of the results. It ain’t pretty.

I’m a biker and I agree with Carabao, I too have great respect for safe cyclists. However in Seattle the norm seems to be bikers who are militant to prove that they are equal to cars. On weekends they will clog two lane roads, riding 3 and 4 wide for miles, preventing any passing or, they will ride in the driving lanes on roads that have wide clean shoulders at speeds much slower than the posted limit. It puts safe cyclists at risk of retaliation. I love Seattle and the trails available to bike but the arrogance of a lot of our bikers is disappointing.

When I’m a pedestrian I hate car drivers, when I’m in my car, I hate pedestrians and I hate cyclists even if I’m on a bike…

Nothing frustrates me more than cyclists who blow through stop signs. During our last organized ride, even after every rider was briefed to obey the stop signs, packs would blow through the intersections in Baltimore.

As someone who drives for a living, I’d rather deal with someone that has a possibility of surviving if they dart in front of me than someone that assumes that every driver of every killing machine they share the road with sees them.

Like I say, bicyclists should not be allowed the rights of a vehicle on the road because they want to pick and choose when they are a vehicle. In the cartoon, they apparently have changed from a vehicle to “just a bicycle”.

They tend to see the car as a weapon.

It’s tough having greatness of spirit enough to see all the differences and the unfairness…WHEN the scene changes and MY advantages lie with MY big bumper…etc.Maybe it’s a spiritual opportunity to develop, seeing the different points of view…

I adore you for this.
I truly want to ‘share the road’ with cyclists, but damn it, they’ve got to share the road with ME as well. The cyclists that get noticed, to the detriment of all cyclists, are the ones who demand ‘respect’ and then refuse to respect basic traffic laws intended to keep them alive. They’re a minority, but they’re fouling the nest for all their fellows.
Stopping at stop signs and red lights, and signalling turns, are NOT optional.
Riding in large packs while deliberately blocking rush-hour traffic (the ‘Critical Mass’ movement) only increases driver hatred of bicycles.

I hate those radio ad commercials that makes all cyclists to be all saints and keep spewing, “Share the Road!”. I’ll respect that as SOON as they respect the same rules of the road.

that’s me in downtown Denver. I once had a chance to speak with the mayor’s aid and, as a cyclist, I BEGGED him to please have DPD start ticketing cyclist who don’t obey traffic laws.

Nah the cops would have found out it was your boss and assume you did it knowingly and on purpose… It is just not worth it to kill your boss no matter how many day dreams we have all had about doing it…

@tigre 1What a great start. I think that everything physical is a spiritual opportunity to develop. Be always vigilant.

I like your point of view. I know a Buddhist monk who drives to his job as a chaplain at a prison and expresses gratitude to other drivers who cut him off, block the passing lane, and the like for the opportunity to exercise his capacity for lovingkindness. Just as Justice Holmes noted in his dissent in United States v. Schwimmer that the challenge for defenders of free speech comes not from ‘those who agree with us but freedom for the thought that we hate’, he sees the challenge to his commitment to view his fellow creatures with compassion not from those it is easy to like but from those who arouse our anger..

YES! When will bicyclists ( and others) remember the road is for everyone and has rules for all of us! Nothing worse than a bicyclist sitting in a turn lane and you can’t get your car far enough ahead to trip the light. Walk across the damn street, already, and let the heavy traffic go.

Aren’t they suppose to stop at a traffic sign like you would in an automoble, or traffic laws doesn’t apply to cyclists?

Don’t you hate drivers who seem to be in a crazy hurry?…Check yourself when you’re late for something really important to you. You are that guy, sometimes…

Roads are used by semi trucks, busses, motorists, motorcycles, scooters, bicyclists, skateboarders, runners & walkers, and there always seems to be a fight over who has more of a right to be there. There’s always tension and drama.
But on the water, you have large, ocean-going vessels (even on the Great Lakes), cruisers, powerboats, personal watercraft (a/k/a jet skis), sailboats, water skiers, swimmers and SCUBA divers, all of whom seem to share the water just fine.
What is it about roads that triggers such emotion?
