There really was a sect called Adamites.There is a Wikipedia entry:“The Adamites, or Adamians, were adherents of an Early Christian sect (later considered heretical by the mainstream Church) that flourished in North Africa in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th centuries, but knew later revivals.”One revival sect from the 15th century, which rejected marriage and practiced free love, was known as the “Picards” (bet you didn’t know ol’ Patrick Stewart was a swinger).

@Rick Boshoven: Although I went to Sunday School, I had read the story years earlier in a comic-illustrated bible my father had bought for me.
