Frazz by Jef Mallett for April 08, 2012
Transcript:
boy: If I could see the future, I'd know the questions on today's test! Mr. Burke: If you looked in the past, you'd see they're always on your worksheets. boy: I just looked in the past and saw me not doing my worksheets. Mr. Burke: Then I'm afraid you got a good look at the future. boy: I wish I could change the past so I could change the future. Mr. Burke: If I change the future, it will change the past. boy: You can do that? Mr. Burke: See? I'm moving the test to tomorrow. boy: How does that change the past. Mr. Burke: You change it. By doing those worksheets tonight. boy: That's in the future. Mr. Burke: Only for a few more hours. Then it's the past again. boy: Time travel makes me motion sick. Frazz: Good thing you're sitting still and studying tonight.

I sat reading this strip wishing I had a spatula to remove my jaw from the floor. None of my teachers would be that lenient. You didn’t study? ’Tis your fault, buddy.

“What happened to then?”“We passed then.”“When?”“Just now. We’re at now now.”“Go back to then.”“When?”“Now.”“Now?”“Now.”“I can’t.”“Why?”“We missed it.”“When?”“Just now.”“When will then be now?”“Soon.”“How soon?”

When our salaries are based on students passing the test and they don’t study, you postpone the test. Funding is based on test scores and graduation rates. School has changed a lot since we were students.

True. They want us to learn of the “real world”, where there is supposedly no compassion. I hope that they are wrong…But this teacher may have helped the kid more than if he had commanded him to “suck it up.”

The quality of mercy is not strained…and the most important lesson is “Study to show yourself approved…” and even so-called conservatives don’t punish because they LIKE it…that’s evil, and the province of torturers and other misanthropes…the whole aim is to build and maintain an order everybody can succeed in…and three cheers to the GOOD teachers out there.I’m still learning that one…

As a teacher, I early learned to let students talk me into something I already wanted or intended to do.
