So, Charlie Brown is like, 8? maybe 10 years old? How many losing seasons could he actually have experienced? To hear him complain, you’d think it was 50. :-))
I believe P.P is on an opposing team, flagfly. You guys prompted me to do some digging in my bookshelves. I found a few old CB books: In “You are Too Much, Charlie Brown,” 1957, they are in a baseball championship, and CB runs after a fly ball, while everyone else stands around. They yell, ’Don’t drop it!’ Of course he does, and they all bawl and blame him. In “Good Grief, Charlie Brown,” 1952, CB is excited to see the calendar reach March 20th. CB runs out with his cap and glove and stands among the kids who are sledding and making a snowman, and yells, “C’mon! Let’s play ball!” In “You’re Something Special, Snoopy!” 1965, rain washes away the pitcher’s mound. From a few of the books I’ve had. I had several others as a Kid. Wished I would have kept them all. Hmm. Memories.
Here is the beginning of the story from 1958. We know it won’t end well, but at least they were in the championship.http://www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1958/06/09
Interesting timing for this strip. Today in Cincinnati, Oh., my hometown, it’s opening day for the Cincinnati Reds. It’s an "official’ holiday, complete with a parade and party downtown. I remember this series. I always loved his eternal sense of optimism. Too bad he doesn’t seem to think that maybe some of it was his fault. Oh well. Go Reds!
Charlie Brown DID win a game, to his sister Sally’s near-shock, but that was late in the run of the strip and CB was left hanging with a so-what-next feeling. I know that feeling: one can feel let down right after one’s greatest triumph, knowing that it didn’t bring you what you really hoped it would.

In the very early strips, when the team first started playing, they did much better. I can’t find the strip… somewhere in the 1950’s

Seems to me they won consistently during the time that CB was on the disabled list with a bad elbow.

This, clearly, is what Wide World of Sports would have called the Agony of Repeated Defeat.
