Ligature- the practice of preventing blood loss by tying up leading arteries was used by the ancient Romans but was not used for more than a thousand years until Ambroise Pare re-discovered it in the 16th century! Graphene- a material made from molecular sheets of carbon, is hundreds of times stronger than steel. It would take the weight of an elephant balanced on a pencil to penetrate a sheet is then as household plastic wrap! Florida stone crabs have crushing claws that can exert a force up to 19,000 pounds per square inch, several times stronger than an industrial car crusher!

By the size of it’s ears I guess it’s an African elephant rather than an Indian elephant. What’s the pencil made out of “graphene”? The example would be to show concentrated weight I suppose or what’s the point of the pencil. Dispersing the weight using a blunt pencil would make “graphene” stronger.

And I thought the mantis shrimp had awesome limbs.

If stone crabs are all that, how come you never see THEM crushing cars! ; )

There are lies, gross lies, and statistics. The above statistics are calculated from the fact that the stone crab claws have a tiny crushing surface. When you divide the claws’ tiny square-inch surface area into a few lbs of force, you get a huge 19,000 lb/square-inch result. You would probably see the same with the surface area of an ant bite.

Where does one go about buying this graphene and what’s its purpose? Can one of those stone crabs penetrate it?

So, are stone crabs related to rock lobsters? ;)

Isn’t that the same stuff that the new Boeing 787 “Dreamliner” planes are made out of? Carbon composite?

Wow if that crab had claws of graphene, he’d be the crab from hell. :-)
