Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for March 21, 2012

Transcript:
In the spring, a livelier iris changes on the burnish'd dove.
In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.
Arlo: Don't look at me that way!
Arlo: Old men have those thoughts year-'round!
@ Jimmy Johnson… S’truth. My dad was dying of cancer, took him to hospital on Friday. He was gone on Saturday, but Friday at the hospital, he looked at one of the nurses and said, “Did you see the rack on her?” So, yeah, we do kinda think about that all of the time.
Riverhawk asks how old they are and where Arlo works. Like Jim in Father Knows Best, Arlo works at the mysterious unnamed company where most TV and comic married men work. Some sort of office work. Not big time execs. Not clerks.
Arlo and Janis were born in the early to mid 1950’s and were in college in 1973 when they met. While their names derive from the obvious 60’s music references, they were born too soon to have been named for Guthrie and Joplin. They appear, then, to live in a universe where time passes only very slightly slower than in ours, which in comic strip land is extraordinarily realism.
There was once a contest, put on by Jimmy Johnson I guess, with an underwhelming prize — a T shirt or something — for who ever could come closest to Arlo’s age. Since I have always thought of Arlo as my alter-ego, I entered but did not win. Unfortunately, I don’t remember how old he was at the time nor do I remember how long ago it was … may have been ten years ago.

Most cartoon characters have attained eternal youth. Charlie Brown was in 3rd grade for 50 years. But Arlo has not seemed to do that.
