Rip Haywire by Dan Thompson for April 07, 2012
Transcript:
Cobra: Well, madame poi is out of our hair for now... Rip: Are there any other people from your past I should know about, Cobra? Cobra: Well... hehe... I've been thinking about that, Rip - And you're right... the past should stay in the past. TNT: And a mai tai should stay in this glass. Can I get a little service here?

I don’t think the Mai Tai will stay in the glass for long. Not with TNT on the job.

That was a fast story about a month long…the next one is a month long as well…I’m curious what the Haywire Hooligans prefer …short stories or the traditional 3 month stories…the reason I ask is I pay attention to this site and sometimes I feel like making the stories too long Can make readers bored or new readers wondering whats going on. (archives people!) and that short stories pacing is too fast.I also notice that If I put Cobra in a bikini…I mean story…readers like her a lot…so my question is based on your level of enjoyment reading Rip Haywire…what appeals to you most…thoughts, Hooligans? I’m interested and what you like and completely admit that I have no clue what I’m doing and have been winging it for the past 3 years. =)

Four to six weeks seems about right to me. Love the characters (especially Cobra in a bikini!).

4-6 is also a good storyline length, but an occasional longer arc would be good as well, especially if it connects back to earlier arcs in your usual twisted way (like the return of Poi…..)

Dan, you wouldn’t want advice from me. I’d run a year-long arc with interruptions for shorter arcs and those would all overlap until even I forgot what the longer arc was about and it would end up taking five years to tell…

I love it when Our Man Thompson asks for suggestions from us loyal Haywire Hooligans; thanks, Dan! Think of storytelling as raising a child: each story has its own unique demands, so you have to decide what’s best for your child. Some story arcs only need short and snappy arcs, while others need more room for your story to breathe. Four-to-six-week arcs seem to work well for RIP HAYWIRE, but if you feel a particular story needs more time to come together, don’t be afraid to go long if you need to. I can empathize with you, being both a mom and a writer myself (who’s almost done polishing my comedy-thriller novel and about to polish another; wish me luck!). Whatever you decide for your future stories, we’ll all be following it eagerly! Happy Easter/Passover/Spring Holiday of Your Choice, Dan and friends!

I’ll take Rip any way I can get him.

I’m with Saucy, I started out with a kind of blank look when reading Rip then I noticed I was clicking on it before any of my usual favorites. 6 weeks is good, too fast and I get confused. Oh and yes, yes! Keep the lady in the strip as much as possible, I love Cobra :) she gives the strip the naughty edge that makes it shine.(and could we keep Crystal too? I love her sense of humor)

I like 4 week story arcs myself, with an overall long running plot as a framework.
More than anything else, I like the parody of—and loving salute to—action comics, movies, TV shows, etc. Nothing like a good explosion to move the plot along and provide a good laugh. Running gags or personality traits are always good.
You’ve got some talent if this is you “just winging it”!
Happy Easter to Dan and the Hooligans!!

Dan, my boy… Just keep doing what you’re doing, because you’re doing just fine.By the way… Did anyone notice if Madame Poi’s boat had that mauve-tinted explosion she wanted?Below minimum wage: You get what you pay for.
