Not always, Arlo — some are beige fishy stuff and grey fishy stuff.

Actually…. it’s all pretty fishy stuff, when it comes down to it.

..and it all stinks to high heaven. Yuk.

I remember a marketing professor talking about pet food labeling needing to be appealing not only to the humans buying it for pets but also for those who purchase it for human consumption. I offer the following from the Michigan State Voices and Visions for Food Safety website:

QUESTION: Is pet food safe for human consumption?

ANSWER: U.S. laws require that pet foods be processed, so that they are safe for human consumption. Part of the logic behind this is that, when people lose jobs, the sale of pet food increases. Obviously, unemployed individuals on limited incomes are not buying pets. Hence, it is safe for humans to consume pet foods.

For those talking about pet food being purchased when people are down on their luck: you can buy Ramen noodles and Spaghettios and other human food staples for a lot less than even the cheapest cat or dog food. That’s a myth that people do that.

How come they don’t have “mouse and gravy” cat food? Or “kitty kabob” flavored dog food? Sorry, My pets made me ask that.

Or if cat food was created by cats: Minced Mice, Sparrow Stew, Ground Greens and Grasshoppers, Milk and Cream Medley, Tuna and Catnip Ambrosia.

What with the price of cat food and the gasoline to go get it,it’s cheaper to let him out a few nights a week to forage for himself !

Brown meaty stuff, that sounds like school food.

If pink slime is in pet food, they have to label it as “beef byproducts”, if in human food, they call it “lean beef” and don’t have to label it at all. Edible and palatable are two different things.

I would really like to see the people who tout the merits of pink slime and who create the standards for food purity actually eat the “meat” they so proudly foist upon us. The entertainment value would be nothing less than exquisite!

I bought our one cat a can of cat food containing roast duck.

I love it, zman and Two Cats.@ hippogriff and Blackwolff: So-called “pink slime” has been used in ground beef for over 20 years and there is, or at least was, nothing wrong with the product. The only problem was the media frenzy and the nutjobs like that chef who mixed beef and household ammonia in a washing machine and then said, “eat this”. Unfortunately, because of the uproar, the company that manufactured this has filed for bankruptcy and many people have been put out of work. All because of a media-coined term and a media driven frenzy of self-righteousness. Oh, and thanks for helping to drive up the cost of hamburger!

I really like this one. :-) Even more so since I have cats and have spoiled them with wet canned food.

Llywus: Sand in sugar, etc. had a long history until the Pure Food and Drug Law was enacted. Longevity of crime does not make it any less a crime.

Okay, hippogriff, and for just how long has been using “pink slime” in food been a crime? It isn’t unsafe, it just has an unpalatable name.Oh, and Reese828, I don’t feel at all guilty that I have more than some others. Neither do I envy those who have more than I. The choices I have made in my life have led me to where I am today, just like anyone else. While I do give to charity, I do so out of compassion, not guilt.And I only give to charities that offer a hand up. I will give nothing to charities that offer handouts.
