I never could figure out how Cinco de Mayo came to be a big deal in LA. The rest of the US is always looking for a good drinking holiday.

As usual for the French, Grandeur got in the way. Napoleon III got dethroned in the French-Prussian War of 1870 but the great undoer of Mexico was the 1848 American invasion that took half of the Mexican territories. American reapeting guns versus the Mexicans British made single shot rifles.
