Transcript:
Toni: "Guys! What's that noise?" Brad: "Oh, that's just the end signal on the dryer. I put a load in" TJ: "Dryer?" Brad: "Trust me, TJ. Shannon's not in the dryer" Toni: "If she's in the laundry room, she'd have head me yell" TJ: "Or not. Come" Toni: "TJ, we can't waste any more time!" Brad: "Or walls!"

This story line is lame.
mojitobaby over 12 years ago
What do you wanna bet the load of laundry Brad put in the dryer included a sneaker or two? If Shannon’s in the laundry room, no way would she hear anything over that racket.
whayle over 12 years ago
OK she better not be in the dryer if it was running! Not good!.And does Toni really not know what a dryer buzzer sounds like?? I mean I know every dryer is probably different, but still. Kind of like hearing a phone ring and being confused what the noise is.

That seems to be Shannon’s everyday face – it looks determined, not angry, to me.

Is TJ serious, breaking down a wall with a sledge hammer to look for a brat?!
SideshowStarlet over 12 years ago
I think this arc is starting to come to an end. I have a feeling that TJ will remember a place he used to hide during his childhood in order to find Shannon. It doesn’t have to be in the dryer. It could be somewhere in the laundry room, but she wouldn’t be able to hear over the noise the dryer was making.

“I’m first.”
…
Congratulations.
SideshowStarlet over 12 years ago
That’s what I thought at first, but it’s looking more and more unlikely.
Airman over 12 years ago
Obviously, a light bulb went off in TJ’s brain that I fail to see. Maybe Shannon is wearing earphones, but why would she be in the laundry room? I think Greg just threw out a clue, daring us to make the connection.
ZacBSM over 12 years ago
Nobody can survive a spin in the dryer. Oxygen depletion and suffocation as well as burns to the skin and possibly internal organs if the dryer heat is on high. Ever read about children and pets who died in dryers? I hope Greg read those. If Greg wants Shannon to live, Shannon cannot be in the dryer. Maybe they merely realized they hadn’t checked the laundry room and the ding only reminded them of that fact? Shannon might be hiding inside a basket or a hamper and the clothes diffused the noises. They might find her sound asleep.

What are you gonna do NEXT, Smiley?
Take the sledgehammer to the Dryer???
Ya know, You two Rentors are gonna have some Heavy-weight S’plainin’ to do to the Owners….,
Sisyphos over 12 years ago
Shannon might be the laundry room and unable to hear anything except the dryer and/or her mp3 device. If finding her turns out to be that simple, then the destruction of floors and walls will truly have been a waste!

She was in the laundry room and her clothing is in the dryer removing the evidence she was outside when WW burnt down…

Chuck373 over 12 years ago
TJ ain’t runnin’. She’s not in the dryer. These people couldn’t find their own butt with both hands and a flashlight. Their smashing down walls and cutting up the floor. Did they even bother to look where she could have been?

For those who don’t like this storyline, come back in a few days.Although I will admit, calling out to a child isn’t the same a going into every room and checking every stop..Sometimes they are playing hide and seek, you’re it and haven’t been told yet..I’m betting this will either push Toni closer or farther away from thoughts of marriage.
elysummers over 12 years ago
This just serves to remind us that these people are still very young. Who wouldn’t have called the police by now?
sleeepy2 over 12 years ago
Wait, why are they demolishing walls? Because they think Shannon is somehow behind them? Is everyone in this strip retarded?
ewalnut over 12 years ago
Why would they think she got in the walls? That’s so dumb.

over the top, but I guess that’s why they live in cartoon world.

Could a dryer handle a child’s weight?

Don’t worry, TJ will pay for the wall to be fixed after they find Shannon in the laundry basket. She may or may not have heard Toni. Doesn’t mean she would come a running.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member over 12 years ago
I still say the sawing of the floor to reveal a hatch (by Brad) and the sledgehammering of the walls (by TJ) is a true “Jump the Shark” moment for this story arc. I greatly appreciate Greg Evans work and efforts in his comic…. but the idea to cut a hole in a floor or to bash out a wall TO SEARCH FOR A MISSING KID is preposterous AND the opposite of funny. I will be very glad when this arc reverts to something else…. this current arc is spoiled for me much like curdled and soured milk left out in the sun.

ARg. I don’t have time to go through 60 comments so sorry if this was mentioned. To address the comment about Toni not knowing the dryer sound… depending on where you are in the house the sound could very well be a very very faint ding You may not realize what it is if your only barely hearing it. (my dryer is in the basement and I didn’t realize what the sound was the first time I heard it ether. )

A child in a dryer would make an unbelievable racket. It is more likely child went into rain, got wet, used drier, and adults look stupid.

When I was a little kid, I used to hate it when people treated me like a little kid. Pretty sure that Shannon had gone out in the rain and gotten wet. But, she was smart enough to come in and put her clothes in the dryer.
tubgrape over 12 years ago
Well nobody said T.J. ws that smart did they? But how dumb are Brad and Toni who should have by now figured that T.J. is a goodball? So is T.J. actually smarter then they are?

I have tried and tried, but I just can’t get into this strip. I’ve read it for about two years now, and the storylines are silly. Once in awhile he pulls off a good Sunday strip, but that’s about it. I wash my hands of Luann for once and for all and this story line did it.
Bucinka over 12 years ago
That does it. I’m done with TJ. What right did he have to destroy someone else’s property? (And don’t tell me he did it once before so it’s okay. It wasn’t okay then, and it’s not now. He just got lucky that time.)
Popeyesforearm over 12 years ago
the kid’s doing laps in the dryer.
ZacBSM over 12 years ago
AND to run the dryer, a child would have to be able to close the door SECURELY for the dryer to be able to be TURNED on (by whom?) and spin. There is no handle inside the dryer for Shannon to secure the door closed, anyway. So she is NOT in the dryer. Dryer doors don’t latch on securely by themselves the way a refrigerators do – for safety reason of children.

On the dryer buzz, – my new washer and dryer have totally different sounds than any I have owned before. They do musical chirps, different ones for each cycle used. Frontloaders

Maybe they should try more practical means of trying to locate her. They seem to have pretty much established she is not in the house, so why don’t they just pick up the phone and start making a few calls – like to the DeGroots or Mrs. Lewis or … Wait a minute I forgot this was just a comic strip.
Airman over 12 years ago
The question that only TJ seems to know the answer to is why wouldn’t Shannon hear Toni yelling if she was in the laundry room? Listening to music through earphones? Hiding in a cabinet? Asleep?
Fan o’ Lio. over 12 years ago
That little tone that Toni heard is what is known as “The Butterfly Effect”.

Wondered about the wanton destruction without a real indication that she may be inside a wall – where would the access point be? I’ll be curious to see where she really has been hiding.

If she had been in that wall she would have probably been killed by those sledgehammer blows. Now back to your scheduled program: “The case of the missing brat”.

This is so irrational that I think Brad is actually dreaming this event. If Don Draper can have nightmares; so can Brad.

I think we may be onto something with that dryer. A play writer rarely writes something into a play unless it has a purpose. I think it means that …. there I go again, trying to be logical in the illogical world of Luann.
Fan o’ Lio. over 12 years ago
For those of you who may not be familiar with the “Butterfly Effect”it goes something like this: A seemingly insignificant event such as a butterfly distracting a cat causes the cat to run between the legs of young Greg Evans causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete walk which in turn causes him to become an instant genius which in turn causes him to go into the lucrative field of telemarketing rather than that of a lowly comic strip artist which means we would not all be here today trying to figure out where that non-existent brat is.Thank you for your patience.

Toni, just how realistic is it to expect to have Shannon respond just because you called her? I think Rhett Butler’s last comment to Scarlett O’Hara is closer to her real attitude.

As usual, Toni and and Brad just follow TJ like he is the piped piper…without questioning his logic. TJ says she’s in the wall, they go and break down walls without stopping and say “hey, how would she get into the walls in the first place?” When will they learn NOT to listen to TJ???
pnorman1 over 12 years ago
I’m thinking the destruction was just a way for TJ to be able to start a remodeling job on the house.
imbaldeagle over 12 years ago
Dave, I don’t know if the following would affect Toni’s or Brad’s outlook on possible marriage, but they provide some pertinent education.1) Don’t agree to take care of your sibling’s undisciplined child – especially if you want to have a life – especially a romantic relationship.2) Learn from 1) and decide to put limits on a your own child’s free expression from the get go.3) Look for teachable moments – don’t approve actions that go against common sense.4) Discuss with your prospective partner, and especially with your committed partner, that you will provide a unified front when approving/disapproving child and teen requests.5) Don’t expect to have uninterrupted intimacy when children are present – and certainly not if you are responsible for their care.
Terrywoebegone over 12 years ago
I agree, Greg has a means to an end. Toni clearly looks irritated at the 2 lunk heands in couple panels. On the other hand she seems to not be thinking clearly either so she can’t be too hard on Bwad. What direction it goes in is a toss up. He wants it more than her so far and that may drive it.

Puddles could have sniffed her out, and would have saved Brad & TJ their next search: The Home Depot. But the dryer factor bugs me. I know it’s contrived and I can’t figure out how or why. Anybody remember an old radio show called, “Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons?” He’d know.
