The only time thunder startles me is when it follows the lighting by mille-seconds. But of course by then it’s too late to worry.Except maybe for that big tree in the front yard.
When we lived out in the country, we once had lighning go by so closely you could hear it hiss. The thunder that followed literally lifted our chair off the floor.
That’s me, low startle reflex and anything in my hands goes flying. 1st Alien movie everyone behind me in the theater was covered in Coke and popcorn within the first 20 minutes.
I used to wonder why people didn’t get out from under a tree when lightening hits it. Then I realized that it’s already too late and the tree is on top of them.
One day I was outside in a thunderstorm and watched a bolt of lightning strike close by — saw the bolt fade into those glowing pearls along its path — and the thunder was like a bomb going off before the pearls faded.
My childhood fear of thunderstrorms died in that moment. My adulthood fear of thunderstorms, however, was born.
Remember going after the cows in a spring twilight rain…on horseback, a treat, and following my Dad, also a treat…lightning everywhere, and BEAUTIFUL.
When I read about the Norse gods and learned about Thor, it was a great beloved private side-room in my family’s Christianity.
I have always loved thunder, too. I’m a coinesseur…(sp?)The best I have ever enjoyed was in North Carolina, long, rumbling, echoing…like God playing bass.
Of course, if a thunderclap caught me by surprise, I’d be like anybody else. Up, up and away…! but jeez, you can smell it.
And there’s always electrical tension in the air before…whoops. This may be new stuff for some folks.Be at home here…welcome to my planet.
This reminded me of the time when, during geometry class (second period), lightning hit the flagpole less than twenty feet from the classroom windows. One guy sitting by the window fell out of his seat. No one laughed at him because almost everyone was shaking too much. After school I discovered that the lightning had blown off a foot-sized piece of the concrete base of the flagpole.
The wife of a man who used to work here got struck by lightning that hit a tree and went sideways into the open window of her office. She was getting something out of a metal file cabinet when it got struck. She couldn’t let go. She went home for the day.
I got struck by lightning on top of Mt. Audoban (just a little west of Boulder. after touching a humming rock. Stay away from piles of humming rocks. It was kinda funny when we touched it, because the humming would stop. We were told later that after that, we were marked men..The top most rock was giving off positive electrons….The reason it was a problem is because we were at 14,00 ft. And yes. The lightning came out of nowhere. Oh, another thing, think twice about going past a sign that says, “Do not go past this point in inclement weather…” Sayin’….
wow, I have never heard of humming rocks! Marked men as in, more likely to get hit again? My best friend was a young teen when his house was hit one night. He had been asleep, but ran out of the house and then found out it was on fire!I hope he isn’t acceptable to future strikes.

Oh yeah…when her bun’s in the air, her face looks more kindly. Vulnerability, perhaps?
I don’t want to…can’t stop thinking about what it’s like when her buns are in the air…now you go there too!
