Here in Europe, extra buttons are often sewn to the care label, in the sideseam. They’re uncomfortable there, and you can’t read the care label. But most people don’t so I guess it works out.
When the only way to use a shirt was to cut it up for quilt parts, my grandmother used to take all the buttons off. We always had buttons for replacements. Replacement of buttons was first thing she taught all the grandkids.

Better to dig the buttons out of the trash today, than to dig one out of doggy-doo tomorrow.

On the rare occasion I loose a button it’s usually past the time I buy a new shirt, so no I wouldn’t save the buttons either.

Must be a cheap shirt to have a button pop off right away.

I keep all my buttons in a file box filed by maker, attached to a card with a pic of the garment, and the date I received it. NOT!!

I do keep my spare trouser buttons. I’ve been known to do physical damage by firing one of those across the room!

I replaced all my buttons with velcro. Of course I wake all the neighbors getting undressed at night. :)
