Dad: Lookit! My old transistor radio! At night I hid under the covers with it pressed to my ear with the volume cranked low! I'd listen to top 40 radio, and baseball games in the summer!
Thatababy: Poor Dad.
The author reveals his age again. He needs to figure out what kids in the 1990s (“Dad’s” actual youth era) listened to. Boomboxes come to mind, plus MTV. Seriously, I listened to transistor radios… in the 1970s.
been there. done that. it was just AM radio, of course. if your reception fades, you just twist and turn the radio into different position to improve it
Yes, and if the weather was good you could pick up faraway places. I was in KY and could get WLS in Chicago on a weekend. The point is, the character reminisces about stuff Granddad was more likely to do than Dad.
Ah thanks Paul! That was one memory I forgot about! And I could pick up all kinds of “big city” stations at night on that little thing. WBZ in Boston for one, and I lived in PA. Still do for that matter.
If Dad and Mom are in their 40s, shouldn’t the cartoonist DRAW them to look that old? Or, at the very least, have them talk about the latest work they’ve had done on their faces and hair?

I went through a lot of 9-volt batteries as a pre-pubescent.

It seem your dad is living in the past.
