I read “livener”, did not recognize it as a familiar word, and even wondered if it was perhaps a brand-name (hard to tell with all-caps comics speech). And before I realized it is related to “enliven”, I wasn’t even sure how it is pronounced (LIVV-ener? LIE-vener?). A quick check of two American dictionaries didn’t help, but the Shorter Oxford did make reference to alcoholic beverages. Sometimes hard to believe it’s all the same language. (And the Google Toolbar spelling checker didn’t recognize it either.)

I never heard the term “livener” before. Usually people will call a drink (or two or three…) a “loosener-upper”.

Here is what I found on “Liveners”.(slang) An alcoholic drink. I needed a few liveners if I was to face the day.
